I have, in my colorful career experienced safety programs from multiple viewpoints. Some experiences have been good and a few not so good. All experiences have contributed to a unique perspective and how safety may be applicable to the independent infrared thermographer operating as a sole proprietor. If you are expecting expert guidance, this is not “IT”, but I can probably steer you to the right source. If willing to read on, I trust you will take away something positive in the form of a curious quest to seek more information.

Infrared Thermographers begin and nurture their careers in different ways. Some start in the employ of a company and find themselves migrating to infrared technology as part of a predictive maintenance program and work to satisfy their employer’s needs. Others may begin their infrared career while enlisted in the military or employed by a federal or state agency either engaged in military operations, predictive maintenance or research and development. Some may leave those companies or organizations to start their own infrared companies. Some may be so enamored by the technology that they embark on a career as a sole proprietor without having any prior experience. Thermographers may become a sole proprietor very early in their training. This article is written primarily for the newly selfemployed infrared thermographer who is yet to discover some of the safety considerations for the profession, the benefits of having a safety program and the disadvantages for not having a safety program. Much of the article is written in first person since it represents a personal view of the topic.
