Alan Kowalik is a Level III Certified Thermographer and is the Owner of Central Texas Thermal Imaging(www.Texas-Thermal.com) and Advanced Home Inspections (www.Advanced-Austin.com). He retired for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in 2011 where he was employed for 27 years performing bridge design, construction, maintenance and inspection. He spent the last years as the State Bridge Inspection Engineer and was responsible for the safety inspections of the State’s bridge inventory which consisted of over 50,000 bridges. These inspections included routine safety inspections, underwater inspections and fracture-critical inspections. Alan graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He is a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. He has bridge inspection certification from the National Highway Institute for “Safety Inspections of In-Service Bridges” and “Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges”. He also holds an Open Water SCUBA Certification and has logged many hours performing underwater bridge inspections. He has authored papers on bridge inspection topics including “Acoustic Monitoring on the Fred Hartman Bridge” and “Risk-based Bridge Evaluations – A Texas Perspective”. He has also been on research panels for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) researching better ways to inspect bridges.
